The setting for the book Al Capone does my shirts takes place the island of Alcatraz. Alcatraz is a prison for the worst of the worst criminals in America, such as Al Capone or Machine Gun Kelly. Alcatraz is located off the coast of San Francisco on a little privet island. In addition, the year is 1935 and Moose and his family are just moving into the prison so that his sister Natalie can go to her special school that is supposed to help with her disabilities.
The Theme of the book is to keep believing because your dream might come true. In the beginning of the book Moose looses all hope for his sister Natalie who has some sort of disease or autism that Moose and his family don’t know how to cure. However, Moose trys many things such as spending more time with Natalie. From this, Moose starts to build on his hope about his sister getting better. In the middle of the book, when his sister gets kicked out of Ester P. Marnioff, Moose and his family start to lose hope. All of a sudden they meet Carrie Kelly with makes the Flanagan family believe the most they ever had before. In the text it says,” You’ve really helped my sister” This shows how much she has helped their family with Natalie. In the end, Natalie gets into her special needs school, which gives Moose’s family high hopes for Natalie’s future.
